Jack Wolfskin Crosstrail 24 LT £85

-

The ACS (Air Control System) back ventilation was established by Jack Wolfskin in 1991 and has been redefined for 2021. In this system a suspended mesh ‘trampoline’ keeps the pack away from the back, allowing air to circulate and wick moisture away.

The chunky padding on the waistbelt and shoulder straps is ventilated for breathability and is highly supportive; it feels like you’re wearing the pack rather than carrying it. Bungee pole loops, a large stretchy panel pouch and a separate front pocket with zip are combined with good sized side pouches and two waistbelt pockets (one of which is expandable to hold a water bottle) to offer plenty of storage. Inside there’s a hydration pouch and you also get a raincover at the base.

The pack as a whole is 100% PFC-free, made from recycled materials and dyed using a process that requires no water, offering impressive green credentials.

IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY… There are no lower cinch straps to help keep contents in the side pockets, and the pole mounting gets in the way on one side. The exit hole for a hydration tube is very tight; larger bite valves will not fit through. There is only one back size and the pack is the heaviest on test, feeling more like a typical daypack.

Verdict

A supportive pack that will carry heavier loads with ease and comfort, but it’s on the chunky side.
