Exped Impulse 20 £115

For a little bag (the smallest capacity on test) there are quite a few storage options here. There’s a stretch front panel, hip pockets on either side of the waistbelt, two exterior side pockets mirrored on the inside by mesh pouches for water bottles and a roll-away hydration sleeve.

There are also internal and external lid pockets, bungee cord pole holders, a dedicated ice axe attachment (although I’d question whether a 20-litre pack is appropriate for UK winter conditions), daisy chain webbing for lashing extra kit externally and an adjustable and removable cord lacing system which also provides the pack’s load compression.

The soft back system fits snugly to the body during wear, making it very comfortable, and the foam board can be removed to use as a sit-mat. The waistbelt is also removable, although this is of more use to scramblers and climbers than walkers. The base of the pack is padded and reinforced, making it particularly tough.

IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY…

This is a knowingly minimalist pack. The capacity is low (although there is a 30-litre version available) and the back ventilation is virtually non-existent. The cord system is fussy, and if it’s removed there’s no pack compression. It’s only available in one back length and there’s no women’s specific pack.

VerdictA

tough little pack that’s the perfect choice if you only carry minimal kit and don’t get a sweaty back.
