Alto TR1 Plus £425

-

Amazing headroom, superb liveability, excellent bathtub floor Expensive, flysheet not flush to ground, hydrostatic head ratings a little low, high walls in wind

Released to much fanfare in 2021, the Alto TR1 Plus is part of Sea to Summit’s first ever range of tents – a line the Australian brand confidently bills as ‘revolutionary’. To an extent, this is marketing hype exaggeration, but there’s no denying the Alto TR1 Plus is amazingly roomy – with what must be best-in-class headroom, liveability and allround spaciousness.

This is achieved via a rather ingenious skeletal, all-inone pole structure featuring the ‘Tension Ridge’ – a cross pole that widens the peak and creates near-perpendicular walls, angling upwards like a wingspan to maximise head and shoulder room. Clever stuff. The groundsheet has a 2500mm hydrostatic head rating and the silicone and PU-coated flysheet is 1200mm, while all seams are fully taped and the height of the waterproofing on the bathtub-style groundsheet is excellent. The vestibule is decently-sized and well-placed vents increase airflow and help combat condensation. There are some cons: the high walls may catch the wind in swirling conditions, the flysheet isn’t completely flush to the ground and inner-first pitching is far from ideal in the rainy UK.

But, if your priority is space and comfort, this is opulent luxury in tent terms – and all at a remarkably light 1228g.

Internal dimensions (LxWxH) 215x107x105cm Packed size 44x11cm Weight 1228g

Verdict

A tent notable for its roomy interior and amazing headroom – but it’s a tad pricey.
