WHO’S UP FOR A NIGHT OUT?

-

What’s the weirdest place you’ve ever slept? My mind immediately wanders back to the slow hum of electricity and torrential rain drumming against my bivvy bag on a sleepless night outside Snowdon’s summit café, a remote Scottish bothy that came under attack in the dark hours of the morning from the antlers of a red deer, and a brutally cold night on a Lake Garda beach under a wet towel (don’t ask). All weird, no question, but all immediately memorable. In my experience, the more sensible your choice of overnight accommodation in the great outdoors, the more forgettable it is likely to be. I’ve slept in tents, hammocks, caves, abandoned buildings and more wet bivvy bags than I like to think about. Quite often it’s been more of an endurance suffer-fest than an enjoyable experience, but every single time I’ve come home the next day with a big smile on my face and a good story to tell. So this month three of the Trail team went off in search of their own overnight tale and came back with rich and ridiculous experiences to share with you. Caves, ponies, cliffs, princes – fantastic stuff! Oli Reed, editor (Twitter @the_outdoordad)
