Pembrokeshire, south-west Wales

Explore the rugged and surprisingly hilly coastline of – with some sea-view scrambling excitement if you fancy!

- CLAIRE MAXTED

Pembrokeshire is a magical place to walk at any time, but summer is one of the best. Nothing can beat the skinny paths along majestic cliff tops above frothy white waves crashing in from turquoise seas, especially in September when the chance of seeing fat seals and their pups lounging on sandy or purple-pebbled beaches is high.

Walk one is a trip through history with St Non’s Chapel ruins, Porthclais lime kilns, St David’s Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace en route. The second gets you high on inland mini-hills, with optional scrambling. The final walk takes the bus to Newgale for one last blast back along the coast for the easiest navigation – simply keep the sea on your left.
