WHAT IS A PORTALEDGE?

-

Put simply it’s a collapsible portable ledge, most usually carried by climbers or mountaineers tackling multi-day big wall ascents. On such faces there are rarely suitable places for a traditional tent, so instead a portaledge is hung from the rock and the climbers camp out on that, with or without a cover depending on the climate. HOW CAN I TRY IT? Prices for Honister Slate Mine’s portaledging experience start from £200 per person. You’ll be provided with everything you need including snug luxury sleeping bags, a Cumbrian food hamper and a Borrowdale bacon buttie breakfast – all you need to take is suitable clothing, appropriate footwear, and your sense of adventure!
