HOW CAN YOU HELP?

-

We mountain lovers are a funny crew. Though many of us don’t live in the places we love to visit, we do retain a powerful sense of connection to them. We’re not the communities living in them but neither are we occasional visitors. Most of us won’t drop litter, so what can we do?

■ Keep Britain Tidy found that 49% of those surveyed believed people are more likely to drop litter when there is already lots of litter lying around. Even orange and banana peel, as well as being bad for the delicate mountain ecosystem and taking years to biodegrade, give an impression that littering is okay.

■ Picking up a bit of litter on every walk does two things. It makes the place look tidier, and also helps to create a culture of tidiness, beauty and pride in our mountains.
