Newgale to St David’s

-

SM847223 Coastal 1 walks don’t always lend themselves to easy circuits, so this route uses the T11 bus 400 from St David’s to Newgale 20 minutes down the coast to the west. Hop off at Newgale House and walk steeply up the road back in the direction the bus came from and pick up the well signposted coastal footpath on the left, rising steeply above the huge, sandy beach and on to the cliff tops. Then simply keep the sea to your left following the coast path all the way to the outcrop at Dinas Fawr.

SM810228 Dinas 2 Fawr is a fantastic viewpoint, with the grassy humplet of Green Scar just out to sea,

St David’s and Ramsay Island up ahead, and all the way to Skomer Island across St Brides Bay if you’re lucky with the weather. Walk out along this skinny, rocky path as far as you like, then turn back the way you came and turn left to continue along the coast path to Solva, where you might wish to stop for a pint, lunch, and to enjoy the colourfully painted houses and arty shops on the main street.

SM805243 Fed 3 and watered (and possibly weighed down with souvenirs), head down along the other side of the harbour on the well signposted coast path once again, turning right at the mouth of the river to cross cliff top farmland of rolling green fields. The views get better and better all the way to Caer Bwdy Bay, which is well worth a slight beach detour to look at the beautiful purple sandstone pebbles, a rock also used to build St David’s Cathedral.

SM767244 From the 4 beach, bob back up on to the coast path the way you came, and keep the sea to your left until you see the ruins of St Non’s Chapel and St Non’s Retreat, a little church overlooking St Non’s Bay. Here follow the clear set of footpaths through the fields back into St David’s, picking your way northwards through the streets to the main road.
