SLEEP HERE

Usually a portaledge will have the advantage of resting against a cliff face. This means that it’s less likely to swing about in the breeze and there’s at least one direction you can look in where you’re not presented by a sheer drop. Not so here. After being driven up from the slate mine car park in a wonderfully battered orange (the Honister brand colour, don’t you know?) Land Rover, you’ll have to tackle a low, dark mine tunnel, a bit of via ferrata clambering, and a terrifyingly exposed walk along a swinging wire bridge, only to discover that your bed for the night is suspended from this pendulous cat’s cradle of cables with some 300m of air between it and the valley floor. Assuming that doesn’t have you turning around and calling for Mummy, you’ll then have to clamber down a swinging webbing ladder just to get into the dangling tent (which is also Honister brand orange, don’t you know?). Still, once you’re on/in the portaledge, the views and experience are pretty unique and to be enjoyed – provided you can cope without peeing for 11 hours and the constant gentle swaying, swinging, spinning, and bouncing of your bedroom...
