JUDGING DISTANCE & SPEED
■ The average person typically walks at 4-5kph when on smooth, flat ground with no obstacles.
■ You’ll travel slower when ascending or descending steep slopes, or when carrying a load.
■ You’ll travel slightly quicker when descending gentle slopes.
■ Remember: Every 10 metres in height you gain will take about a minute longer than on the flat.
■ It’s worth taking into consideration that personal fitness and fatigue will also affect walking time.
