▲ Once called the ‘Druid Circle’, Castlerigg Stone Circle is England’s third finest after Avebury and Stonehenge, as it sits below the slopes of Blencathra.

▲ For a genuinely upland stone circle, there’s a pathetic four-stone one on Bonscale Pike, with a more distant view of Blencathra. ▲ Dartmoor is sprinkled with crosses made of recalcitrant granite. Respect to whoever chipped those out with stone chisels.

▲ Artist Andy Goldsworthy has scattered stone arches and fancy sheepfolds across Dumfriesshire and northeast England.
