Woodland covers 13% of the UK: 10% of England, 15% of Wales, 19% of Scotland and 9% of Northern Ireland. ■
In Europe, only Ireland has less, at 11%. Most other European countries range between 32-40%. ■
Ancient woodland makes up 25% of UK woodland but holds 36% (77 million tons) of carbon. ■
Forestry contributes £954 million to Scotland’s economy every year:
£771 million from forestry and timber processing, £183 million from forest recreation and tourism.
