Giddy Edge Traverse

-

SK297596 From the 1 car park on the A6 east of Old Matlock walk north, then take the first footpath on the right across the iron footbridge over the River Derwent. Follow the well-defined path east under the railway line and up through woodland, then go right, through the entrance arch to High Tor.

SK297591 After 2 passing an information board, the route splits. Left takes an easy path across the Tor. Right is Giddy Edge, a traverse across the rock face of High Tor. There is a one-way system in operation due to the exposure and lack of fall protection on the right of the traverse. If in any doubt about your safety do not proceed but take the left-hand footpath option. For each route, at the end, follow the trail and steps downhill then turn north-east by a deep chasm and continue through a gate to a road junction. Turn right, then next left up a steep hill. Where the road bends sharp right, go straight across fields for 300m to a path junction. Go uphill to Riber Castle, passing it on your right. Turn right at the road junction as you

enter the village of Riber, then left by the Ordnance Survey Fundamental Benchmark. Take the footpath on the right, south to Hearthstone where you turn left walking in-between the farm buildings to join a wide track running south-east.

SK309582 3 Follow the right-hand fork where Hearthstone Lane 8 splits, for 1.2km to Coumbs Wood.

Take the central of three paths initially generally south through the wood to the south-western edge, then follow south-east to cross open ground continuing in the same direction into woodland. Follow the path down through trees, taking the south path where it forks, to the road by the mill. Cross the road bearing left to a wide lane.

SK317562 Walk 4 along the lane to cross over the River Derwent and turn right along the canal-side path. Just after the pump house cross the canal again to arrive at Highpeak Junction.

SK313559 Ascend 5 the High Peak Trail for 2.25km until you reach Black Rock.

SK292558 Go left to 6 view the rock outcrop and watch the climbers. Return to the trail, go left then take the first footpath on the right and descend through woodland north-east to a field. Follow the right-hand wall to a wide track then go left through Moorside, taking the public path between houses eventually dropping down to the B5036 at Cromford. Bear right across the road then take the next left. As the road bends left, go right between houses, and follow the path dropping down the field, emerging on to the A5012. Cross the road going right, then left at the next junction for 100m until you reach a narrow lane running uphill.

SK293570 Keep 7 north-west as you ascend Harp Edge, bearing right at the first path junction, then maintaining course through the woodland. Exit onto fields at Upperwood, following the path north-west to Ember Farm.

SK287582 Take the 8 north-east path immediately before the farm, following the PNFS signpost to Matlock through woodland to reach the Heights of Abraham Cable Car station. Cross the drive and descend the hillside to Matlock Dale, the path going left around a large private house. Turn left along the drive, then steeply downhill, at one point looking over rooftops, until you reach the A6. Turn right and return to the car park.
