THE MAKING OF WASTWATER SCREES
1 High, exposed rock is broken down by extremes of temperature, running water, weather and ice.
2 Hard rock, more resistant to erosion, breaks away in smaller pieces.
3 Rockfall collects at the base of the slope.
4 Larger, heavier boulders fall to the bottom and smaller rocks collect on top, forming a scree slope.
What we now see is the remains of a volcano that collapsed in on itself. Evidence suggests the collapse caused a mega explosion comparable in force to Krakatoa. Glacial eroding has further shaped the mountain into what it is today.
