Trotternish Ridge
ISLE OF SKYE
The Isle of Skye is one of the most popular locations for landscape photography anywhere in the UK, perhaps even the world. Some of my favourite places for photography are the more remote parts of the Trotternish Ridge (above), away from the overcrowded Quiraing. My last visit was a perfect example of the need for patience in mountain photography. I had reached my chosen viewpoint half an hour before sunrise, after a long walk in the cloud and rain. There looked to be no chance of getting any light, and I almost gave up and went home. I decided to stick it out, however, and spent the next three hours hoping for a break in the cloud. Finally, just when I was about to give up, some light broke through. An intense burst of colour broke out over the cliffs, and I spent a breathless few moments behind the camera. Only 20 seconds later, and the light had gone again.
WALK IT
The best way to experience the Trotternish Ridge is to walk its whole length, preferably over two days with a high wild camp. It is a joy from start to finish, with superb views and high quality walking.
