No roof bars, no problem

The clever designers at Decathlon have developed an inflatable rooftop tent for vans that attaches directly to the top of the vehicle, with no need for roof bars. It also contains a real bed base, inflatable mattress, side tarp, and ladder set. There’s an updated version of the Decathlon Rooftop Tent 500 (£499) coming in spring 2022 that fits cars too.

The car roof specialists

Thule is well known for making excellent roof bars and roof boxes, so you can trust it to make quality roof tents too. Thule’s Tepui range (from £1499) uses a fold-out design similar to the Tentbox Lite and offers 2-, 3- and 4-person options. The latter two come with an extended canopy that drops to the ground, giving you a private entrance/annex to stash your gear in.

Good enough for Bond…

Land Rover has teamed up with roof tent specialists Autohome to create a pop-up tent that fits the New Defender. It’s not cheap at over $3000 (and, of course, you need a Land Rover Defender to go with it), but as you’d expect it’s incredibly slick. When closed it’s protected by a lightweight fibreglass shell, it opens automatically by unclipping one latch, and comes with luxury cotton mattress, pillows, interior LED light and stowage net for your kit. We spent a weekend in one in the Lakes and loved how it can be opened up on three sides for big views of the mountains.
