Starting from the A66 lay-by at Scales, this is a simple but enjoyable route in ascent and descent. Follow the path that contours uphill behind the White Horse Inn, zigzagging up grassy slopes before breaking left for Scales Fell. Once you reach the escarpment at around 600m, the hard work is over and the vast hollow of Scaley Beck opens up below. You then get a grandstand view of Sharp Edge as you stroll uphill to Blencathra’s summit: Hallsfell Top.
