...YOU'RE PITCHING A TENT IN HIGH WINDS

-

WHERE DO WE PITCH THIS THING?

On the flattest, firmest ground you can find, utilising any available shelter, like boulders or hummocks in the ground. Beware trees. Stay low as you pitch it.

IT’S BLOWING AWAY!

Tie a guy line to your pack or an immovable boulder, put the pegs in your pockets, and shove the stuffsacks away immediately. If the zips are open, close them.

WHICH WAY DO WE PITCH IT?

With the lowest end facing into the wind, – usually the rear. Peg out the back of the tent first so that it blows flat over the ground, then roughly but firmly peg out the guy lines (you can perfect them later).

WHAT IF THE PEGS COME OUT?

Shove them right into the ground at a 45° angle. This is why you want firm ground.

TIME TO GET THE POLES IN...

This is a risky part. Make sure that all parts of the poles are fully seated and push the pole halfway into the sleeve. Then pull the rest of the sleeve up onto the pole until it’s seated at the far end. Smooth it all out and seat it securely at the end near you.

NOW WHAT?

Peg out the rest of the tent, making sure it’s fully tensioned. The wind will get into and tear at any slack. Guy lines are more stable at their full length, so run them out and peg them down, keeping them fully tensioned. Pull them out in all directions to safeguard against changes in wind direction.

OKAY, I THINK IT’S DONE.

Make sure it’s as taut as poss, and get in!
