Gear-hauler for the vertically challenged
Gregory Maven 55 £190
When it comes to bigger rucksacks for carrying more winter gear or for backpacking, I struggle. Trying to fit that much stuff into a rucksack that fits on my relatively short (5ft 4in) frame usually means the pack comes up high at the back of my head. It’s fine on the flat, but when I’m climbing mountains and need to look up, it severely restricts my head movement – which drives me crazy! Not only is it uncomfortable and annoying, it restricts my field of vision too. Believe me I’ve tried a lot of rucksacks over the years, and when it comes to 50+ litres, I was still looking… until now. Gregory is not a brand I had heard of until recently, although they are well established in the States. The Maven takes 55 litres of gear without restricting my head. I’ve no idea how it does it. It just does. It comes in two adjustable back lengths, in three sizes – 45, 55 and 65 litres. Plus, it has a moulded hipbelt, a sturdy construction made for carrying heavy weight and a full-length side zip to provide easy access. It’s a fully-featured pack that’s made to last.
Verdict
