Enterkin Horseshoe
NS873045 From 1 the lane end near Inglestone farm take the rough track ahead for 150m (parking area here). A faint or vanishing track continues north along the left edge of a field then along the tops of drops to the wooded Enterkin Burn. Where the green track bears right into a field keep ahead over the slight rise Rashy Hill.
NS876063 At the 2 corner of a hedge, drop into the saddle ahead. Bear down left on a very faint path to contour along the base of the steeper slope of Nether Dalveen Dod. At the top corner of walled enclosures take a disused gate with step stile alongside. In 200m join a gravel track down to the entrance to the Enterkin Pass.
NS878078 Cross 3 the stream (with a picnic table nearby) up to a wooden railed gate above the track. Head uphill to right of a walled enclosure, and up the steeper slope above. The rising ridgeline has steep drops on your right. After the final short rise you cross a fence to the summit of East Mount Lowther.
NS878099Head 4 down north-east beside the fence. In the saddle a stile is the top of a possible shortcut back down the Enterkin Pass: just follow the electricity poles. Otherwise stay left of the fence, up towards the white radar dome on Lowther Hill. Just below the top, a gate on the right has SU Way marker, and the ‘Lunch Box’ metal shelter.
NS888106 Follow 5 the path on below the radar station to a stile. Don’t cross this but turn down to right of the fence. Head south down the wide spur and up the slight rise of Wether Hill. Leave the flat summit just east of south, over a lower hump (Windy Hill) and down into the steep sided pass called the Square Nick.
6 NS892087 From the left (east) end of the Nick, head up very steeply to right of the fence, then west up the rather less steep spur of Steygail. At the top, the track marked on Explorer maps does not exist. Keep uphill to Steygail’s flat and unmarked summit.
NS888084 The 7 descent ridge is bizarrely bendy. Head down south, bending left (south-east) to a levelling. Keep southeast up a slight rise (521m on Explorer) to meet a fence. A quad bike track runs to right of it, down south, then west, to a gate at the ridge foot. Just ahead, the track from Dalveen farm runs through the low pass.
NS880073 Take the 8 track briefly down to the right, through a gateway where the track steepens down towards Enterkin Burn. At once turn up left, along the slope top to right of a fence. After a broken gate, the fence ends at a crossing, broken wall. Take a gate on the left then a wall gap with fence to step over, and continue south along the humpy ridgeline. Cross Nether Dalveen Dod, then in 400m Collinnie Hill. From this head down south-west into a col, and up to the hedge corner on Rashy Hill. Head south reversing the start of the route to Inglestone.
