3 MORE SCRAMBLY SUMMITS

-

▲ Glyder Fach Snowdonia

Most hills get less exciting at the top, but not so here. Glyder Fach is crowned with jagged boulders and rock flakes. Up here is the Cantilever Stone, jutting out above thin air and a heap of rock, and Castell y Gwynt ‘Castle of the Wind’, a mass of spires and fins. It’s best accessed via Bristly Ridge, a sensational Grade 1 ridge scramble that arcs 220m up, depositing you straight into this summitscape.

▲ Inaccessible Pinnacle Isle of Skye

The Cobbler may be the most technical summit on mainland Britain, but the Inaccessible Pinnacle is the most technical of all, so-called because, for most, it is. This rock sticking out the top of Sgurr Dearg is the second highest point on Skye’s notorious Cuillin Ridge, and getting there requires climbing ability and an abseil back down. The exposure is dazzling but so is the feeling of being up there.

▲ Helm Crag Lake District

This is the only Lakeland fell that Wainwright never reached the top of, and at only 405m high you may wonder why. The answer is the Howitzer, a massive barrel of rock that must be scrambled up. Which is, at first, straightforward but then the holds peter out. With a smidgeon of confidence, a dry day and some attention though, you can enjoy a view of Grasmere that even Wainwright never beheld.
