Ingrid’s Dos and Don’ts

-

Top trainer Ingrid Grayling has been working with dogs for more than 40 years. Here are some of her top tips on ensuring your dog is happy, well-behaved and well-balanced dog

Always be a calm and assertive 1 pack leader.

When you ask your dog to do 2 anything, always ensure that your dog carries it out straightaway, and show your dog immediately what you require of him. Always make sure that what you 3 ask your dog is fair and that he understands what you mean. Make sure that you always have 4 time for your dog: this includes the correct amount and type of exercise and freedom.

5 Never shout at your dog – use a lowered growling voice to tell them off.

Do not allow your dog to get the 6 better of you – if you show any weakness, your dog will use this to his advantage. 7 Whenever possible, keep your dog to a routine.

Ensure that your dog does not 8 go through doorways, gates etc before you.

Do not allow your dog to jump in or 9 out of your vehicle until you give the command to do so.

If there are any children in the 10 family, ensure that they are supervised while handling the dog.

11 Allow your dog time for itself. This applies especially if you are a busy household. 12 There is no need for your dog to be with you all the time, especially when he has been exercised, fed and toileted. Don’t feel guilty when you ask your dog to get on his bed so you can have some time to yourself – you both need some space.

Ingrid runs training throughout the year from her base near Dartmoor, with access to her own flock of sheep, and specialises in training dogs with a high prey drive. For more information, go to ingrid-grayling.com
