LONG-TERM TESTS
FJÄLLRÄVEN ABISKO 75 £260
You would not believe how much stuff this sack can
take. The solid base gives great protection considering how much weight it can carry, while the big, comfy shoulder straps and waistbelt cope well with big loads. The front zip pocket is very useful for wet waterproofs. Big and brilliant. The Abisko 75 has now been discontinued, but the Keb 72 (£300) is very similar, with great eco credentials. VERDICT A big bag for big adventures! USED BY Tom Bailey, Trail photographer & writer USED FOR 7 years
GREGORY 55L MAVEN BACKPACK £190
Gregory isn’t a brand I’d heard of until recently, although is well established in the States. The Maven takes 55 litres of gear, and very unusually for my 5ft 4in frame there is no restriction in the movement of my head. It comes in two adjustable back lengths, in three sizes – 45, 55 and 65 litres. It has a moulded hipbelt, a sturdy construction made for carrying heavy weight and a full-length side zip for easy access. A fullyfeatured pack that’s made to last. VERDICT A quality backpacking rucksack with full-length side access, that doesn’t restrict head movement.
