If you don’t already know this, instant mash can be a gamechanger on backpacking trips. It’s cheap, light to carry, easy to make (even on a tiny stove) and is pretty filling. Until recently we always bought SMASH, probably because of the famous slogan from the old TV adverts. But actually, this stuff is so much tastier, and it even comes in buttery, cheddar cheese or cheese and bacon flavours.

VERDICT If you’re backpacking on a budget, this stuff is far cheaper than dehydrated or freeze-dried meals and makes a half-decent supper when mixed with a bit of chorizo or smoked sausage.
