Ingleton to Whernside

1 SD694730 Turn right out of the Ingleton car park and follow the road north-east. Where it forks go down to the left and cross the bridges over two rivers. Just after the junction to the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail go up steps on the right to follow the track up through trees to a gate. Follow the footpath north-west across pasture to Thornton Hall. (Alternativ­e route: Ingleton Falls Trail to Thornton Force, fee required. Then over the bridge to Twistelton Lane, turn left to Kingsdale, then left down the road to map point 3 (SD691756).)

2 SD689742 At Thornton Hall go left to the road and then head north for 1.5km. Ignore the junction on the left and continue until you reach a communicat­ions mast setback from the road on the left.

3 SD691756 Go through the double gate and follow the track to the right of the mast then through a second gate to pass below Tow Scar then onto fine views of Morecambe Bay ahead. Bear right to leave the limestone and follow the defined grassy track generally north to the Turbary Road.

4 SD684767 Go right along the wide track for 3km passing several caves ‘pots’ and five gates until you arrive at a ladder stile. (Do not enter the ‘Pots’)

5 SD700790 At Bullpot Bank go over the stile and follow the wall north-west directly up the hill to go through a stone stile and gate in the wall at the top. Walk south-west for 400m to reach the triangulat­ion pillar on Gragareth.

6 SD687793 Retrace your steps to the stile then continue following the wall on your right north-east then north via Green Hill, the highest point in Lancashire, to the County Stone. Go over the stone and keep the wall on your right proceeding north to the stile at Great Coum with Aye Gill Pike ahead on the skyline.

7 SD701835 Follow the wall south-east until the hillside begins to level out then bear left to the cairn and small quarry.

Follow the track north through the quarry then east descending the hillside and exit via a gate into Green Lane on Flow Moss.

8 SD711836 Turn right and follow Green Lane to the road that runs through Kingsdale.

9 SD723822 Turn right and walk down the road for 550m then go over the stile at the access point.

10 SD721817 Follow the wall line east up Birk Shaw to the first summit. At the top bear right to the cairn then go east across Cable Rake Moss and up to the summit of Whernside.

11 SD738814 From the triangulat­ion pillar on Whernside go through the wall and turn south-west following the wall on your right.

12 SD734802 Where the path forks for Bruntscar, carry straight on southwest across Combe Scar to the limestone pavements at Ewes Top. Follow the track down through Twistleton Scar End to join a stone track, Twistleton Lane.

13 SD699753 Go left for Twistleton Hall, through the gate and between the building to join the tarmac farm drive to Oddie’s Lane. (Alternativ­e route: Go right up Twistleton­e Lane and take the footpath on the left to Ravenray Bridge to join the Ingleton Falls Trail, fee payable, and return via Thornton Force to Ingleton).

14 SD699745 Go right and follow Oddie’s Lane back into Ingleton.
