Pupers Hill to Ivybridge

-

DAY 3

SX672673 Walk back down the hill to the Two Moors Way and turn right. Follow the path south-west rather than the bigger track directly west. Walk past the stone circles on Hickaton Hill and down into the Avon valley, reaching the river at a new clapper bridge and Huntingdon Cross.

To extend this final day it’s a nice walk down to the Avon Dam from here: turn left and follow the path to the dam, returning the same way.

SX664662 Go through the gate and follow the Two Moors Way west along the valley to Huntingdon clapper bridge. Cross the Avon and follow the path steeply uphill, passing a granite Two Moors Way sign at the top and descending slightly to reach the old mining tracks south of Red Lake where there is another granite marker stone – the high, conical spoil heap of Red Lake is an obvious feature to the north.

SX649659 Join the track and follow it west. After a short distance the track loops around to the left – from here you’ll be trending south for the rest of the walk. Follow the track along the ridge parallel to a long line of boundary stones and the river Erme valley, both to your right. Pass to the right of Leftlake and under the trig point on Ugborough Moor, then continue down the ridgeline past Piles Hill to a path junction marked by a boggy peaty area in a slight saddle.

SX657599 Continue on the obvious track, following the Two Moors Way south-west down the hill. Pass Hangershell Rock and follow the path as it loops around Weatherdon Hill. Leave the stony track south of Weatherdon Hill and follow a grassy path downhill to the gate at the edge of the open moorland where you rejoin the Dartmoor Way.

SX645576 Go through the gate and follow the track downhill between fields, turning right at the bottom to reach Hareford Road at Stowford Farm. Turn left onto the road, following it downhill and over the railway line into Ivybridge. Turn left, following Cole Lane parallel to the railway. Stay left, leaving the road and following the path signed to the station where the route finishes.
