Carrock Fell & Mosedale

-

1 NY359316 There’s parking at various points, including just south of Bowscale. Walk north along the road, through Bowscale and Mosedale settlements, and below the gabbro boulders of Carrock Fell’s lower slope. After Stone Ends Farm, in 200m turn left on a grass track, and head straight uphill to join an old path at the foot of the steeper slope.

2 NY352337 The path slants up to the left, to join Further Gill stream. It heads up a little dry valley just to the right of the stream, to a sudden arrival at gentle heathery slopes above. The path turns right, north-west, up heather, peat and stones, then through a gateway gap in ancient fallen stonework to a cairn. The well built summit cairn of Carrock Fell is 500m further on.

3 NY341336 A peaty path heads west, soggy in the col before the slight rise to Milton Hill, then grassy and pleasant along the wide ridge. Follow the main path bending to the right around the tops of Drygill Beck, then up across a gravel track to

High Pike’s large sprawling cairn and stone bench.

4 NY318350 Head back down the same path, forking right down to the track. Turn right, south-west, to Lingy Hut, a useful shelter. Continue ahead, the soggy track degenerating to path and reaching Grainsgill Beck. Here a path continues ahead up a spur to the right of a stream hollow, but ignore that (it heads to Knott) and fork left, south, up a rounded spur of grass and heather to the low cairn on the minor and almost unvisited Coomb Height.

5 NY310327 For a shorter return, a useable path runs down east towards Mosedale. Otherwise bear right on a path west-southwest for 100m then fork off left, south, down rough heather which soon gets easier. A faint grass track runs down the wide spurline from top left to bottom right, and slants down the steeper foot of the spur to the track beside the River Caldew.

6 NY314314 Turn upstream, crossing the river at a suitable point. Continue upstream along the riverbank, then turn left near Blackhazel Beck on a small grass path through the tussocky ground. This is the map’s marked ‘public footpath’ line. It runs to left of Blackhazel Beck into its little green valley, which is dotted with rounded granite boulders.

7 NY319305 After 1km the valley divides. Cross the sidestream to a sheep pen, and go up the grass spur between the two streams. It widens to become a rough grassy slope up onto the plateau south of Bowscale Fell. Join the path running left along the plateau top, and up the gentle slope to Bowscale Fell.

8 NY333305 Head down north-east past another cairn, down to a slight rise with cairn and glimpses of Bowscale Tarn down left. The well defined ridge runs down eastwards, over a lower rise with a cairn. The lower ridge bends down south-east, with a final steep descent on an eroded path between gorse bushes. The path arrives at the northern edge of Mungrisdale. Ahead, it leads to the roadside fence, so turn to the right of a small quarry to a track with a gate leading to the tarmac road.

9 NY363305 Turn left beside the road to Bowscale.
