Boscastle to Jamaica Inn

-

DAY 1

SX095914 The route 1 begins at the Boscastle Harbour. Head south-east out of the village and cross the road towards the car park. Behind it, a footpath is signposted that drops down and continues through the woods. The footpath handrails the River Valency and continues on a steep path uphill for approximately 3km.

SX124913 The 2 footpath then meets another footpath heading south at an intersection. Follow this new path south towards Halamiling. The path initially descends down towards woodlands, before ascending again after you cross the River Valency at the footbridge. Continue south as the path rises above the woodlands and into open fields. The footpath follows the hedgerow to the east of the fields and is well worn.

SX130903 Pass 3 through the hamlet of Lesnewth and cross the road towards the church.

Go through the metal gate and through the churchyard, keeping to the right-hand side. The footpath goes through the churchyard and out into the fields behind, before a short descent into another woodland. Cross the road and follow the footpath over more fields before meeting another road with several junctions.

SX123883 Once on 4 the road, head east towards a disused and overgrown quarry before then turning south at the road junction as you draw level with the old quarry. Continue along this road for several kilometres. On your left you will pass the source of the River Camel which presents as rough ground that you can see from the road. Take care as this section will require you to cross the A39 which can be busy. Davidstow Creamery will be visible ahead. Pass the Creamery and follow the road across the airfield and beyond it again.

SX171837 At New 5 Park Farm, head south and pick up a track that leads between the fields. After passing an isolated barn between several trees, the track leads back out onto open moorland.

There is raised boundary at the edge of the moor, navigate to the north of this, and then take a direct route towards Lanlavery Rock. Do not divert south and follow the edge of Roughtor Plantation to avoid the boggy ground. From the plantation ascend to Showery Tor and then onwards up to Rough Tor.

SX145807 From the 6 top of Rough Tor, head east down the boulder field towards a wooden gate and bridge at the De Lank River. Continue through and follow the track to ascend to the trig point at Brown Willy. From here, head south for a few metres from the summit and you will see a worn track heading east down the other side. The path will be very well worn as you drop off the rocky slopes. Follow the path towards a wooden stile and gate. Once through, turn south and follow another worn footpath.

SX166797 The worn 7 track is well established to the left of the fence and boundary line. Follow this same path south through Catshole Downs. Once through a gate, it then ascends briefly uphill again until Tolborough Tor comes into view. Head up to Tolborough Tor through some long grass.

Continue in the direction you were heading and down to a gated track. Once through the gate, follow the track all the way back to a road. At the end, turn right and head under the A30 to the end point at Jamaica Inn.
