Salomon Outline Gore-Tex 2.5L £180
Lightweight, affordable, recycled materials Non-adjustable wrist cuffs, no vents
We tested this jacket in atrocious January weather in Cumbria and it performed impressively, particularly considering the £180 RRP (on offer for £126 at salomon.com at time of writing). It felt light and comfy in use, but also shedded rain well and kept us dry during torrential downpours. Breathability (RET <6) was good too, and we didn’t find ourselves overheating, even when working hard.
The fit was more relaxed than athletic, with room for layering underneath. We liked the adjustable hood, which provided good wrap-around protection, but hated the non-adjustable cuffs – they were too loose around the wrists and risked water ingress, so a bit of a design flaw. The Outline Gore-Tex 2.5L (2.5-layer) is made from Gore-Tex’s Paclite technology, which has a 28,000mm hydrostatic head (HH), glued and taped seams, a PFC-free DWR treatment, and a 100% recycled polyester outer face.
Features are relatively minimalist, in order to keep the weight and price down. You get two handwarmer pockets, waist hem adjustment, elasticated cuffs and glued hood visor, but you don’t get any pit zips, vents or internal pockets. If you need better features – and a slightly heavier, burlier and more protective design – the Salomon Outline Gore-Tex Hybrid (£270) is an upgrade.

Verdict A well priced, lightweight and ecofriendly waterproof made from Gore-Tex Paclite technology – but the wrist cuffs are non-adjustable.
