I personally have been attending the Northern Experts run by the enthusiastic Manchester 17 MCC since 1967, and have an in-depth knowledge of the area around where the majority of the events have been run. This is in the Peak District National Park high above the Spa town of Buxton in Derbyshire. I actually rode in the event from 1977 until 2011 missing only the occasional event. The hazard where these images were taken is in Wildboar Clough which is situated between Buxton
and Congleton. 2013: In the present day the event has lost its attraction, with the majority of the ‘Works’ riders not attending the event. The hazards at Wildboar Clough are still in use. The ‘Buzz’ at this year’s event was Richard Timperley who was out for the first time on a Jotagas 250cc. The bulk of the entry is made up of riders on the three alternative routes the club offers. Dan Thorpe on the Gas Gas was a worthy winner but where have the ‘Top’ riders and the spectators gone? 1977: The event has so many of the works riders in attendance on their special machines including winner Nigel Birkett on the super light Suzuki RL 325cc, Rob Shepherd on the four-stroke Honda and Mick Andrews who was on the development Yamaha 320cc. Throw in a host of importer supported riders and you soon get the picture, it was still a prestigious event to win with many spectators gathering to watch the top riders in action from the North of the country.
