Gas Gas TXT 80
When we received the news that Spanish company Gas Gas were to produce a new-for-2015 80cc model to compete against the Beta equivalent we were quite excited – a new model! The Beta 80cc has proved its credentials in the all-important Youth sector and we looked forward to the chance to test a machine to challenge its merits. In the Youth Standard Wheel Class one of our Junior test riders, Mitch Brightmore, had taken his Beta 80cc to a thirdplace finish in the 2014 British Championship, so he certainly knows what is required to compete at the cutting edge of competition in this class.
First impressions are always important and the new model Gas Gas certainly looks the business and fits in well with its elder brothers. Apart from the obvious components required to produce the 80cc model and make it competitive in the Youth sector the machine is generally over-engineered, which has to be a good thing in the long run. The unification of the components brings many benefits, including the father-and-son relationship ability to maintain the machine. The thinking behind the new model is to get the competitor involved with the brand at an early age and they can then follow their motorcycle career enjoying the benefits of the brand’s extensive trials dedicated model range.
OVER TO MITCH: “In 2015 I will move into the Youth B Class in the British Championship on a 125cc Gas Gas and so I can relate to this machine pretty easily. Its general feel is very confidence inspiring straight away with everything where it should be. The front and rear suspension felt very good and even my light weight did not affect the overall handling which gave good feedback, letting me concentrate on where I was going. I love the feel from a Gas Gas clutch as the biting point is always the same. This is one of the strongest points of the machine as, with the smaller engines, a good clutch is necessary to get the most power from the motor. It started easily first kick every time, and the gear selection was good and positive. The power is not as good as I would have expected and this is where I feel that the machine would lose out. I enjoyed my time on the new machine and I am sure that with a little more power Gas Gas could be onto a winner”.
