TONI ON TARGET

As expected, it’s the 35-year-old trials superstar that is Toni Bou (Repsol Honda-ESP), who is heading the 2022 championship. With Busto winning the opening round in Spain, however, it looked like the last 15 years of domination by Bou may have been coming to an end.

He bounced back on day two, though, before his oldest rival, Adam Raga (TRRS-ESP), knocked him off the top spot on day one in Andorra. As we have witnessed so much in the past with Bou, when under pressure, he performs at his very best and three consecutive wins at the last three rounds have proved this.

A very frustrated Adam Raga was disqualified in Germany on day two for allegedly cutting the course — it’s hard to believe, considering how compact it was — but, with no points, there he is now a distant third in the championship.

Of the younger riders wanting to move up in this premier class, no one has really made their mark apart from Busto and, at times, Miquel Gelabert (GASGAS-ESP), but the older guard of Jeroni Fajardo (Sherco-ESP) and Matteo Grattarola (Beta-ITA) keep interrupting them. Gabriel Marcelli (Repsol Honda-ESP) keeps missing his top form, but in truth, the younger riders have a huge gap to bridge if they are to challenge for the podium.

A newcomer to the class in 2022, the efforts of Great Britain’s Toby Martyn (TRRS) are not being reflected in his results, but as the experience grows, we are sure this will change.

Even after three rounds, Toni Bou and the four-stroke Repsol Honda remain in charge. He has managed to open up a clear championship advantage with just Jaime Busto (VertigoESP) managing to hang onto him. But, with a 23-point advantage already, is he on course so early in the season for title number 16; we will have to wait and see.
