ROBERTS AND TRRS ON TARGET
The consistent riding combination of Iwan Roberts and the TRRS would need to be continued if he was to keep the young pretender Harry Hemingway (Beta) at bay. This is a battle between two riders from two totally different generations of trials: one has the experience and older age; the other is young and hungry, but who has the nerve to go all the way in 2022?
Round seven would have action all the way as both the current series leader, Roberts, and
Harry Hemingway knew they needed to win for different reasons.
With the numbers drawn, Harry Hemingway would start with the advantage as he would be behind the championship leader. Roberts was the one in command though, as he looked the better rider; more relaxed on the opening lap, he put in a superb opening lap of just six marks lost. Unfortunately, Hemingway looked a little the opposite, and he knew an early stop in section eight and then again in 12 was not what he needed as he returned a score of 15 marks lost.
On lap two, it was Roberts’ time to feel the pressure with two fives in a total of 13 as he stopped on the step at section 12. With Hemingway parting with 11, it was all going very much in his rival’s favour, with one lap to complete. Showing all the experience of a much older rider, the head on the young shoulders of Hemingway was at its very best, and when he parted with just five marks on the final lap, victory was in sight. However, it was not to be; although he did take the extra championship point
for the best lap, he lost out on the tie-break decider. Harry Turner continued to improve and rode his own trial to finish on the podium’s final step. With just one round remaining, Roberts has one hand on the trophy; may the best man win.
