Peter Gathercole judges your fur-strip wing patterns and sets a new tying challenge
Fly Dressers’ Guild chairman Peter Gathercole judges TroutFisherman’s fly-tying competition Sixth challenge comment
THE sixth challenge of Flymasters was to tie something with a fur strip wing, Zonker or Minkie style, where the material is attached over the top of the body. We also mentioned Mohican style where the fur is added in bunches but almost all entries fell into the first two categories. The idea was to create something that was action packed with plenty of movement, hopefully to tempt a big late-season trout. As ever, our tyers rose to the challenge producing a range of entries from subtle little fry patterns to great colourful things that would certainly catch any trout’s attention. It was a good strong entry which meant that, yet again, some very good flies didn’t quite make the cut – though hopefully this simply means our tyers will try even harder in this month’s challenge. So well done to all who entered.
THE Flymasters fly-tying competition is judged each month by TF’s very own Peter Gathercole. Each month a challenge will be set inviting you, the tyers, to put your creativity to the test. Your pattern should then be posted to us at the Trout Fisherman offices and will be passed onto Peter. Now the Chairman of the Fly Dressers’ Guild, author of the best-sellers ‘ Fly Tying For Beginners’ and the ‘ Fly Tying Bible’ and all-round game fishing personality Peter is well placed to be judge. It’s up to you to impress him!
How flies will be judged
Peter is looking for innovation, a high standard of tying and creativity but this has to be tempered with the pattern’s prowess as a fish-catcher – after all, that’s what it’s eventually designed to do. All submitted flies should be squashed barb or tied on barbless hooks.
