My first Troutmasters badge
A COUPLE of weeks ago, my eightyear-old grandson, Oliver Usher, landed a 7lb 12oz rainbow trout on his own, at Church Paddock Trout Fishery, leading to his very first entry into Troutmasters, writes Ray Wells. I have been taking him to many local Hampshire fisheries over the last three years and this was the culmination of his mastering the basics. He practised his casting with me in the morning but we didn’t catch any fish. After lunch, he asked if he could go off with his own rod and fish alone. He set up his rod, tied on a fly of his own choosing, and targeted a larger than normal trout moving toward the bank. The next thing I knew, he was fighting like mad, eventually landing it. I have never seen such a happy boy! He received his Troutmasters badge, which he’s very proud of and even took it too school, where he was complimented on his achievement at assembly, in front of his whole school.
