Whichever fishing method you adopt, a softer, more forgiving rod is considered best. The obvious reason is that finer tippet lengths are protected now, especially when short line techniques are employed. By the same token, a rod which easily yields helps massively during those short casts as now a short length of fly line often fails to load the rod correctly.
