Sage's Igniter double-hander, a Red Truck four-weight rod, Vision Subzero clothing and Snowbee GEO-LT boots

Spring and autumn are often the best times to be salmon fishing. Hit it right and you could be in shirt sleeves, casting small flies in light winds over perfect water. But you could just as easily be facing cutting upstream winds, sleet and big water. Days when you need to drive out heavy T or MOW tips and big tubeflies to cover the fish. To match these demanding conditions you need a rod that can transfer sufficient power through the line to beat the wind and turn everything over. The new Igniter has an ultra-fastaction blank made using Sage’s Konnetichd Technology. This aims to optimise fibre-to-fibre energy transfer along the length of the blank, as well as minimise twist and vibration, to deliver tighter loops and higher line speeds. Which is what you need to punch through the air and deliver extra yards. The question is: how does it differ from previous Sage models? The first thing you’ll notice is its lightness. Our 13ft 6in, 8wt test rod weighed only a fraction over 7oz. We also noticed the high line speed it generated compared to the Method rod it is replacing and that it is much easier to extract this performance from the Igniter than older models such as the TCX and TCR. We used the recommended 550grain (35.7g) and 600grain (40g) skagit heads and heavy sinking tips, which it cast well into a stiff wind. We could feel the speed of the rodtip’s recovery, but for the average caster to maximise its potential we feel that the Igniter is capable of taking a slightly heavier head. Our advice is to always cast the rod before you decide to buy: if your casting style is short and snappy then you may prefer the Igniter’s very fast recovery; if your style is more laidback then you might look at the slightly sloweractioned Sage X model as a possible alternative. This good-looking rod has quality fittings and is supplied in a black cloth bag and black powder-coated aluminium rod tube. Double-handed models range from 12ft 6in, 6wt to 15ft, 10wt.
