ANNANDALE ESTATES, RIVER ANNAN

Trout & Salmon (UK) - - FIRST CAST -

You may have driven over this wonderful spring trout beat while heading north or south on the M74. With just ten named pools over 5½ miles, its long glides are home to trout of more than 5lb. Spring (late May to early June) is the best time, among budding leaves and flowers, nibbled pasture, scented woodland and hatches of large dark olives. Initially, you’ll hear the motorway, but its sound will soon be muted by the noise of nature. Take a stick to negotiate a riverbed of uneven rocks and the odd shelf. Use a 9ft five-weight rod and a floating line – they will cover most pools and conditions. Fill a fly-box with Olive Duns, Paraduns, Emergers and Shuttlecocks in sizes 12-14, as well as a few alternatives (Beetles and Stoneflies) to ring the changes. Beat maps (with parking spots) are available on the Annandale Estates and Fishpal websites.
