THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT

Craig writes: I sat down with Graham Mackenzie, president of Inverness AC, to learn about the beat and the club’s struggles and achievements. He told me that running the club is not easy, but the effort made by everyone is worthwhile.

He looked disappointed when I asked him how many kids had joined this year. He said, “We’re down again.”

I expected him to say they had three or four child members, like most other clubs, but instead he said, “This year, we only have 85.”

I had to re-adjust my footing, and then I congratulated him.

The club holds 16 fly-tying clinics for children in the off-season and every Wednesday in June there are kids’ casting classes; both courses are run by volunteers. Under-18 permits are free. More examples of the club’s good practice, as they recruit future ambassadors of the sport and custodians of the river.
