TOM RAISES Hell
TOM ELLIS is having a devil of a time as the crime-solving Prince of darkness
FORMER Miranda STAR Tom Ellis has been burning up the screen in fantasy comedy Lucifer. The 38-year-old from Cardiff plays charismatic California nightclub owner Lucifer Morningstar – aka the Devil – who uses his special skills to solve crimes with homicide detective
Chloe Decker
(Lauren German).
With season three arriving on
Amazon Prime
Video this week, we sat down with
Ellis to hear how the show has changed his life…
LUCIFER IS THE MOST FUN
I’VE EVER HAD DOING ANYTHING… It’s been a crazy ride and it’s now a big part of my life. I get to do lots of different things on the show. I have fun one day, kill someone the next day, have a fight the next day – and then I go and play the piano and sing the next. It certainly keeps me on my toes!
AT THE END OF SEASON TWO,
LUCIFER WOKE UP IN A DESERT WITH ANGEL WINGS… That was a real showstopper. The last time we saw those wings was in season one when Lucifer burned them in front of his brother, Amenadiel. Now, the question everyone’s asking is how and why he got them back.
LUCIFER IS CERTAIN THAT HIS DAD – GOD – IS RESPONSIBLE…
He’s sick of his dad controlling him, and this season Lucifer is going to pull even harder in the other direction. You’ll see extra devilishness in him. He goes back to partying.
WE HAVE A NEW COP ON THE SHOW WHO TURNS CHLOE’S HEAD… There’s a lieutenant who captures her attention and that’s new territory for Lucifer. He’s not number one anymore. Not that they ever sealed the deal with each other – but they’ve got this thing going and it’s the closest thing to a relationship that Lucifer’s ever had.
Smallville’s TOM WELLING PLAYS THIS NEW COP, AND IT’S A REALLY FUNNY DYNAMIC… Not only are we both called Tom, we are the same height – 6ft 3in – and we can literally stand toe-to-toe with each other. We’re going to explore that as well. It’s going to be fun.
I LOVE THE FACT LUCIFER DOESN’T TAKE HIMSELF TOO SERIOUSLY… That appealed to me because there are a lot of shows that are very earnest and dark. I don’t have a problem with that – but I love our show’s sense of comedy and fun. I DIDN’T KNOW Lucifer WAS BASED ON A COMIC UNTIL I READ AN ARTICLE ABOUT ME WINNING THE ROLE…
But now we’re doing the show, I’m reading the comic books avidly.
THERE IS A LOT OF LAUGHTER ON SET… We want to create an environment where we take our work seriously, but don’t take ourselves too seriously.

German is one of the funniest people I have met
– she has a filthy mouth!
