Here and Now
as rival factions threaten us democracy, CARRIE faces life-changing decisions in homeland
DRAMA Sky Atlantic HD, 9pm/ Sky Atlantic+1, 10pm Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter star in a dark comedy drama from Six Feet
Under creator Alan Ball about a multiracial family.
IF THERE’S ONE thing we’ve learned from six seasons of Homeland it’s that, in the murky world of intelligence services, betrayal is the name of the game and allegiances can change like the wind.
ABUSE OF POWER
That’s certainly the case as the US thriller returns to Channel 4 this week, picking up from the events of last year which saw EX-CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes)
save US President Elizabeth
Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) from an assassination attempt by opponents within her own ranks.
As a result, Carrie moved to Washington after Keane asked her to become a senior advisor. However, she’s grown disillusioned with Keane, who has taken revenge on the plotters by arresting hundreds of innocent members of the intelligence services, aided by ruthless right-hand man David Wellington (Linus Roache).
‘Carrie is outraged by the betrayal and abuse of power,’ says Danes. ‘The President is not who she believed her to be. Carrie doesn’t trust her or Wellington at all.’
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
Meanwhile, filming is set to begin on the very last season, and showrunner Alex Gansa promises a fitting conclusion for such a ground-breaking, award-winning drama.
‘We have some big ideas,’ says Gansa. ‘And, as always, we’re going to keep one ear cocked to see what’s actually happening in the real world. How much that will influence the story we’ll tell remains to be seen.’
