Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

TV & Satellite Week - - Films -

This classy adaptation of John le Carré’s spy novel is a gripping thriller that amply measures up to the BBC series from 1979. In the lead role, Gary Oldman is more than a match for Alec Guinness’s TV portrayal of spycatcher George Smiley, whose hunt for a Soviet mole at the heart of the British secret service in Cold War-era 1973 forms the basis of the story. The film eschews any macho heroics but is as tense as any Bond or Bourne escapade. Oldman gets fine support from the likes of John Hurt and Colin Firth. 2011, 15, 127MIN
