MATT CZUCHRY SWAPS being a sharp-suited lawyer in The Good
Wife for being a scrubs-wearing doctor in the new US medical drama The Resident, which begins on Universal this week.
Czuchry plays Dr Conrad Hawkins, a third-year resident at the Chastian Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Although talented, he is also arrogant, rude and a rule-breaker.
‘He wants to save every patient, and he’s willing to go up against the system to make it happen,’ says
Conrad’s approach does not endear him to all his colleagues. Idealistic new intern Dr Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) is assigned to Conrad, who tells him on his first day: ‘Everything you thought you knew about medicine is wrong.’
It’s not a great start to the student-mentor relationship, which doesn’t get any better as the series progresses.
CLASH OF THE TITANS
‘They have different perspectives on medicine,’ explains Czuchry. ‘But Conrad is trying to impart his wisdom to Devon.’
While Conrad sees potential in Devon, he only has contempt for the hospital’s chief of surgery, Dr Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood). Feted for being a brilliant surgeon, Bell is hiding the fact that he has a hand tremor and is putting his patients’ lives at risk.
In this week’s opener, a patient undergoing a straightforward appendectomy dies on the operating table after Bell nicks an artery, but he bullies the rest of the surgical team to cover for him.
THE SCALPELS ARE OUT!
Conrad, though, is aware of Bell’s shortcomings and isn’t afraid to confront him – but exposing him will not be so easy.
‘Conrad knows that if he wants to help his patients he’s going to have to work with Bell in some capacity,’ says Czuchry. ‘You’ll see over the course of the season that he has some dirt on Bell, and Bell has some dirt on Conrad. They use that to manipulate each other to get what they want.’ Meanwhile, nurse practitioner Nic Nevin (Revenge’s
Emily Vancamp) also knows that Bell is unfit to wield a scalpel and, like Conrad, she is prepared to challenge her superiors.
‘She will go to any lengths to protect her patients to the point where she is willing to lose her job,’ says Vancamp, 31.
Nic and Conrad may see eye to eye over Bell, but they are not so in tune when it comes to each other. The pair are in an on-off relationship, with Nic unsure that Conrad can give her what she needs.
‘Her feelings for Conrad are incredibly complicated,’ says Vancamp. ‘There is a deep connection between these two, but he’s got a million walls up, whereas she is very open. But I always root for love, so who knows what will happen.’
