There isn’t a white hat to be seen in this grimly realistic Western starring Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank, and the most heroic character wears a bonnet not a Stetson. The setting is the harsh plains of 1850s Nebraska where the hardships of frontier life have driven three local women mad. Swank’s pioneer volunteers to escort the women back east, and ropes in Jones’s claim-jumper for the five-week journey. This is a dark, prickly film, but it contains great depths of compassion and pathos.
