THE GRAND NATIONAL
ITV presenter ED CHAMBERLIN looks forward to Saturday’s race
LIVE HORSE RACING Saturday, ITV HD, race starts 5.15pm
FORTY HORSES AND jockeys will line up at Aintree racecourse on Saturday for the 171st annual running of the world’s greatest steeplechase.
We asked ITV presenter Ed Chamberlin for his Aintree memories…
MY FIRST GRAND NATIONAL
MEMORY WAS… backing Spartan Missile in 1981. I was blissfully unaware of one of the National’s great stories unfolding in front of me. I must have been the only person cursing Bob Champion and Aldaniti. I FIRST WENT TO AINTREE… in the early 1990s and used to watch from the Canal Turn. The challenge was to try and get on Grandstand waving behind Des Lynam. How times have changed!
THE GRAND NATIONAL IS SO
MAGICAL BECAUSE… it’s the people’s race. It’s the one day when horse racing transcends sport. Families gather up and down the land to do sweepstakes and watch the race.
I’M MOST LOOKING
FORWARD TO… the big race itself. Thursday and Friday of the festival are relaxed and good fun, but Saturday is different. It’s a monster!
I PREDICT THE GRAND NATIONAL WINNER WILL
BE… Minella Rocco. This lad has stamina in abundance plus plenty of class.
