SPOILER ALERT: DON’T READ THIS ARTICLE UNTIL YOU’VE WATCHED THE LATEST EPISODE OF Bodyguard

EVER SINCE HOME SECRETARY Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) succumbed to her injuries and died in hospital after a bomb attack, her personal protection officer, David Budd, has been trying to find out who set off the lethal device at the political event…

‘David is suspicious of everybody,’ explains actor Richard Madden, who plays him. ‘But that’s his job.’

GUILTY PARTY?

Budd first turns his attentions to a couple of suspects. He tries to find out the true identity of a mysterious man calling himself ‘Richard Longcross’, who Budd knew Montague had met up with shortly before her death. This week, Longcross pays a visit to Budd’s estranged wife, Vicky (Sophie Rundle)…

Another suspect in Budd’s eyes is Roger Penhaligon MP (Nicholas Gleaves), Montague’s former husband and the government chief whip who became her political enemy. Budd has a confrontation with him, where threats are made.

MYSTERY MOTIVES

Meanwhile, Montague’s feisty former political assistant, Chanel (Stephanie Hyam), who was fired earlier in the series for her incompetence, tracks Budd down to a coffee bar, and begins to flirt with him, asking for his mobile number. However, is there more to her motivations than wanting a date?

‘There are so many theories and counter theories,’ explains Madden. ‘The viewers will all be kept guessing, just as I was.’

With more than 10 million people tuning in for the first episode, the Jed Mercurio-scripted Bodyguard – which concludes next week – has been called one of the biggest dramas of the last decade. Madden says he’s delighted to be playing such an intriguing character as Budd, a former Iraq War veteran who had secretly been having an affair with Montague.

‘He’s very much the strong and silent type,’ says Madden. ‘I was attracted to the contradictions in David. There is a struggle going on inside him, but he’s a good man.’
