TOM FELTON HAS a history of playing darkly fascinating characters, from his breakthrough role as Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies to his recent appearance as Alchemy in The Flash.
His role in Origin, a new sci-fi thriller series for Youtube Premium, may be his most mysterious yet. With episodes directed by Resident Evil’s Paul WS Anderson, the 10-part drama features Felton as Logan, one of a group of strangers in the near future who wake up on a spaceship to discover the other passengers and crew have vanished.
We asked Felton, 31, to tell us more…
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SERIES AND YOUR CHARACTER, LOGAN?
It’s 10 strangers from around the world all on this ship hoping to colonise a new planet and leave their old life behind. Each episode, you learn a little more about their backstories. Logan is a petty criminal from California.
He’s a bit of a hothead, with a foul mouth, but he’s a lot of fun to play.
WHAT WAS THE SHOW’S APPEAL FOR YOU?
An interesting aspect is that the audience learns about the passengers’ backstories but the passengers on board don’t. As each episode goes on, the audience starts to question who is who, and the more reason there is to be sceptical of who everyone is. There is a whodunit aspect to it that I really like.
IS IT FUN PLAYING DARK CHARACTERS?
The dark side of a person appeals to me as an actor. I’m quite a light-hearted, easy-going British dude, so the chance to play an aggressive, foul-mouthed American is a happy switch.
