Patrickj Adams stars in a powerful drama

about the American SPACE RACE

THESE INTRIGUING SHOTS are from the Disney+ space drama The Right Stuff, airing on the subscription channel later this year.

Based on Tom Wolfe’s 1979 book, which was made into a

1983 film, the eight-part series, beginning in the late 1950s, follows the Mercury Seven, a group of NASA astronauts who made America’s pioneering space flights.

It explores how, amid the Cold War space race with Russia, the elite military test pilots and their families dealt with life in the public eye as the men joined the Project

Mercury space programme and faced pressure from Washington and the general public to become the first men in space.

Suits’ Patrick J Adams plays principled family man John Glenn, while What We Do in the Shadows’ Jake Mcdorman is acclaimed naval test pilot Alan Shepard. But their rivalry threatens the programme.

The rest of the team includes Gordon Cooper (Colin O’donoghue), Wally Schirra (Aaron Staton), Scott Carpenter (James Lafferty), Deke Slayton (Micah Stock) and Gus Grissom (Michael Trotter). Meanwhile, Nora Zehetner plays Glenn’s wife, Annie, and Shannon Lucio is Shepard’s wife, Louise.

‘The Right Stuff evokes the awe of the moment we first ventured into the unknown,’ says Mark Lafferty, the series’ showrunner who is an executive producer alongside Leonardo Dicaprio and Jennifer Davisson. ‘When the world is confronted with significant challenges, this story reminds us that what seems impossible today can become the triumph of tomorrow.’
