Comedian JOHNNY VEGAS transforms vintage vehicles into staycation sensations for a luxury campsite in North Wales
FACTUAL Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping Wednesday, C4 HD, 10pm
GONE ARE THE days of pitching canvas tents in the pouring rain. Now it’s all about ‘glamorous camping’ accommodation offering a luxury outdoor experience. This week, actor and comedian Johnny Vegas gets in on the glamping craze.
Filmed over two years, four-part series Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping sees the Benidorm star and his long-suffering assistant, Bev, convert five vintage buses for a ‘boutique’ campsite in North Wales.
But with no previous experience of running a business or carrying out such epic renovations, Johnny and Bev have their work cut out.
We had a chat with Johnny, 50, to find out more… HOW DID THIS SERIES COME ABOUT? I had a camper van which got stolen. I’d always meant to replace it, then I lost my dad in 2017 and thought: ‘If not now, when?’ I went on holiday to Wales and met somebody from the National Trust who said they had land they wanted to develop. I then did what any sensible person would do: I got drunk, went online and bought a bus… from Malta! IN THIS WEEK’S EPISODE, BEV HAS TO
GET THE BUS SHIPPED TO THE UK… We had three attempts at getting the bus into the country from Malta and, on the third attempt, the ferry caught fire! Bev basically runs my life. This glampsite wouldn’t have been possible without her.
WHAT OTHER VEHICLES DO YOU HAVE
ON THE SITE? Alongside the Maltese bus – named Patricia after my mum – we’ve got an American school bus and a German fire truck. There’s a Citroën bus and Morris Minor caravanette, nicknamed Billy the Snail. This wasn’t really a business venture – it was a passion project I wanted to see through to the end.
HAVE YOU EVER HAD ANY CAMPING
DISASTERS? We went camping with my dad years ago. It was just a field. We had an old tent and gale-force winds hit. Then at 2am it ripped down the middle. We spent the entire night in the rain, being whipped by canvas! WILL THIS SERIES SHOW VIEWERS
A DIFFERENT SIDE OF YOU? I hope they’ll be surprised to see that I do have passions, that I’m creative and that I’m someone who doesn’t just go on TV and shout a lot. Of course, I’ve got a lot of passion in my work, but I have as much passion for other things.
