SKY MAX PUTS a fresh twist on the murder-mystery genre with a supernatural thriller about a young woman who returns from the dead to track down her own killer.
Set in the Lake District, eightpart drama The Rising begins when a young woman, Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard), emerges from a lake and returns to her home.
However, Neve is stunned to discover that her loved ones can neither see nor hear her. As Neve watches on, concerned locals begin an urgent search of the area – and it dawns on Neve that she’s dead.
Afraid and confused, she realises that she’s been murdered and vows to stop at nothing in the hunt to find her killer.
MYSTERY
As locals search for Neve, the hunt focuses on the lake where she was enjoying a party with her boyfriend, Joseph (Solly Mcleod), and other pals when she disappeared.
Sure enough, her family discover Neve’s lifeless body floating in the water the next morning.
It’s a devastating moment, but things take a shocking turn for her estranged, hard-drinking father, Tom (Matthew Mcnulty), when he sees his daughter walking towards him calling his name.
‘Tom really struggles with being able to see Neve when the rest of the family can’t,’ says Mcnulty. ‘It’s a tragedy that he only gets to know his daughter after she’s died.’
As Neve investigates her own murder, her paranormal powers allow her to go to places where the police can’t. And it’s not long before she uncovers deeply buried secrets.
‘We’ve seen young female victims so many times on TV, and I love the way this story subverts that genre,’ says Kelly. ‘Neve gets to investigate her own murder, which empowers a character who would usually be the victim.’
